So what does your job actually involve? Programming four amazing days of the best independent horror cinema on the planet. I spend nearly a year watching submissions of shorts and features, with around 5% of what I see eventually making it into the programme. As a discovery festival, I want to find new voices, new visions, and also celebrate potential, showcasing all the filmmakers reinvigorating the genre, and who you may not have heard of yet, but you will. I also mix in some classic films. The point is to always put stunning films on the big screen where they belong! Best / Worst Aspects? Best bits: watching horror films with horror fans, being involved in the careers of so many talented filmmakers and watching some people’s perceptions about horror changing for the better.
Worst bits: Dead by Dawn repeatedly being called a gore fest when we’re nothing of the kind, people eating noisy things in the dark, mobile phones not switched off... oh, for a Faraday cage! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Adele at the start of her career? It will be wonderful and will open up a ton of really fun, interesting opportunities. It will also sometimes be tough, frustrating, demoralising and exhausting. The parties are terrible but the free booze helps. To keep your sanity, channel Bill Hicks when you finally realise how much power marketing departments have. Get used to that look on people’s faces when you tell them what you do – it never changes. When someone asks what your favourite horror film is, run away: there are some people who will never differentiate between a good film and a film they enjoyed. In 20 years your parents will still be asking when you’re going to get a proper job. Invest in good shelving. The beautiful films you see will astound you, bringing untold pleasure and amazement. The god-awful films you see will all get DVD releases.
And finally... what are you most looking forward to in 2013? Our festival’s 20th anniversary! The film line-up is superb, the guests are fantastic, we have so many treats in store (including the best cake in the world) and I know it’s going to be a full-on celebration. And then I’m looking forward to a holiday. And then new seasons of Big Bang Theory and Arrested Development. And then planning our 21st fest...
