Petrolheads, this one’s for you. And we don’t just mean boys. Anyone who’s been to a motor racing circuit knows that it’s often not for the fainthearted: it’s the unbeatable combination of ear-splitting engine whine and the smell of burning oil, added to the faint whiff of adrenaline as men and women push their souped up vehicles to the limit.
But this event at Fife’s famous Knockhill circuit is more accessible than most. Aimed at people with more enthusiasm than money, the Hot Hatch Day is a chance for amateurs to take their little metal toys onto the circuit and have a go. For those who get there early enough to take part, the cost is just £40 and there’s tuition thrown in. The rest of us can be content to wander round the circuit, eyeing up the mad creations in steel and fibre glass that people are building in garages and backyards all over the

As we went to press, Celtic’s European fate is still in the balance, Alex McLeish has yet to receive the dreaded vote of confidence from his chairman and this lbrox meeting might yet be the day when Martin O’Neill’s team officially lifts the SPL title for the third time in four years. There is one thing we do know: there’s no such thing as a meaningless Old Firm game.
Rangers’ season may have brought to an end by Henrik Larsson’s Scottish Cup strike at the start of the month but they will be as keen as ever to put one over their hooped rivals. Yet motivation appears to have been one of Rangers’ main problems this season as well as McLeish’s signings not having set anyone’s heather on fire.
Adding to the Govan hordes distress, Celtic’s winning bandwagon just keeps rolling along. There may be long-term fears over the future of Martin O’Neill and the likelihood of ever bringing in a fonivard fit to lace Larsson’s boots, but for now, everything in Celtic’s garden is rosy. Like the proverbial dangerous wounded animal, Rangers will be hellbent on biting back.
