Here are a mere five reasons to check out the man who’s been dubbed ‘the poet laureate of the DC crime world’.
1. He’s paid his dues George Pelecanos had his first novel published in 1992. aged 35. Previously, he'd burrowed away as a cook. dishwasher, bartender, shoe salesman. ad director, electronics agent and construction
worker.
2. What’s new? His latest noir novel Hard Revolution concerns two cops (rookie Derek Strange and veteran Frank Vaughn) trying to do their job against the backdrop of violent social uprising across the USA.
3. He likes his music Hard Revolution even comes with its own s0undtrack, including tracks by Wilson Pickett. Percy Sledge and Otis Redding.
4. He’s a film noir bore, right? Wrong. He lists the less than hard-boiled Straight Story and The Insider among his favourite films of the last decade though the Western is his real cinematic passion — Magnificent Seven and The
Wild Bunch for two.
5. And who does he envisage playing Nick Stefanos, his signature crimefighter, in the movies? He reckons Nicolas Cage would be a good shout while wishing that Steve McQueen was still alive to really do his creation
