THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: HOLLY BLACK AND
TONY DI’TERLIZZI

Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi met in that classic New York way - she was interviewing him in Brooklyn for a sub-culture magazine. It was about his illustration work for fantasy role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, and they quickly became friends. Several years later, Holly and Tony have created a whole new fictional world together: The Spiderwick Chronicles. But there’s a story behind that, too: a book seller passed on a note by three children at a signing who claimed they’d found an old field guide in their attic. They wanted Holly and Tony to have a closer look. ‘They told us this crazy adventure once they’d found the sketch book and we changed it and morphed it into the stories that are The Spiderwick Stories today,’ says Tony. The little books combine old-fashioned elements of storytelling - a detailed map at the front, ornamented chapter headings and captioned illustrations, with a modern twist of subject - the Grace children’s parents are divorced. (‘Ever since their dad had moved out, everything had gone bad.’) ‘This was a conscious decision to make the stories seem relevant to children’s lives today,’ says Tony. ‘A kid today is not going to relate to the trials and tribulations that a kid 100 years ago is going through, despite the fact that
the book looks like it was made then.’
His illustration is brimming with character, reminiscent of the work of the great American illustrator, Norman Rockwell. Tony
acknowledges the influence. ‘My parents had a massive Norman Rockwell collection of all the Saturday Evening Post covers which were a massive influence on me. Expression. It’s something I really strive for. And now Tony and Holly are on tour
with their interactive storytelling session. Aimed at children aged
between six and ten, the events are all about getting people involved in the mystery and adventure told through a collection of fairy artefacts. ‘lt’s almost kind of an X-Files thing,’ says Tony. ‘What I like about it is it’s a very tactile connected event - they don’t just sit there and listen.’ (Ruth Hedges)
