What do you get if you put stand up comedians, magicians. filmmakers, musicians, poets and puppeteelrs in a
room and mix them all up? A night of cabaret in The Company of Pleasure.
Back in November. after the success of their two previous events. Hell and Love. Marc Pencak and Eliza Gilchrist decided it was time for more. With war looking inevitable. they decided that pleasure should be the theme and the show would take place over four acts. each of which tackles different types of pleasure. ‘lt's hard to do ‘positive‘, especially in stand-up. so a lot of the pleasure is strange,‘ says Pencak. ‘Like someone getting their jollies from S&M rather than cute kittens. A lot of it is pleasure with an edge.’
Pencak wanted to make something that had the elements of theatre combined with the buzz and excitement of stand-up, a place where people could have a couple of beers and relax. This enjoyment will come from acts including poets Dominic Harris and Jenny Lindsay, filmmakers Duncan Rennie and William Andrews. comedian John Sinclair, magician Steven Dick and puppeteer Rick Conte. Eighteen acts with one theme - a mix that can only result in pure unadulterated pleasure. (Jane Hamilton) I The Company of Pleasure. Wed 19 Mar. The Stand. 333 Wood/ands Road. 0870 600 6055. 9pm. £5 (£3).
