Scott Harrison steps up to defend
While Scotland sadly falters at an international level in all too many sports - football, rugby and drug-free skiing for starters - we have enjoyed a certain degree of consistent success with quality boxers. From Ken Buchanan through Jim Watt to Gary Jacobs, wiry, powerful hitters have been a Scottish speciality and 25-year-old Scott Harrison is no exception.
This is Harrison’s first defence of his featherweight world title since he won it in convincing style over Julio Pablo Chacon in Glasgow in October last year: this time he takes on Northern Ireland‘s Wayne McCullogh. The notoriously publicity- shy Harrison hails from Cambuslang and steadily gained credibility through dispensing with a number of rated former champions before winning the lBO Intercontinental and Commonwealth Featherweight titles in swift succession.
Promoter Frank Warren has acknowledged the loyalty of regional fans with a second major bout outside London in as many months. And rightly so; boxing’s popularity has never been so high, with Braehead Arena's capacity being extended to meet the huge demand for tickets.
The next step, should Harrison defeat McCullogh, is into the real big money stakes with a proposed £1m prize purse for a defence against legendary Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera, bringing with it a fixture at Hampden Park and surely. a place in Scottish boxing history. (Mark Robertson)
