If Divine was a person, it would be a young child. As a club, it's the unparalleled granddaddy of alternative sounds. Jack Mottram asks and answers.
slit Ill! HIT!!! Sfllllll lit arm
What's going on? The Art School’s longest running residency, Divine, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this fortnight.
Ten years? Must have gone off the boil ages ago. Not so. Resident disc jockeys Andrew Divine and Hush Puppy are still packing the kids in, and the ageing regulars can't get enough of that crazy Divine sound.
What's their secret? Quite simple,
really. You can‘t hear classic Northern Soul stompers getting busy with top- drawer 605 pop, crazed Hammond action, moogy noodling and wigged-out funk anywhere else.
Northern Soul? Does that mean everyone has a moustache and patches sewn on their coats? Don't be so daft, this isn’t Wigan. The crowd is made up of tipsy students, well turned out mod types and achingly fashionable pop stars. And people in dufer coats. Do they have guests? Not as a matter of course — Messrs. Divine and Puppy spend the daylight hours tracking down exclusive oddities so the playlist stays fresh. Like-minded luminaries occasionally take to the booth, though, including the similarly obsessive St Etienne main man Pete Wiggs and Chris ’Beans’ Geddes of Belle and Sebastian fame. The birthday bash will be a traditional residents night, though. What have they got planned? As ever, there will be a new instalment in the Divine mix tape series, jam packed with floor-fillers from the last decade. Divine is also known for its fetching 60$- inspired flyers, posters and projections, and the gallery room will have a retrospective of tasty graphics from 1990 to last week. There's also going to be bottles of the fizzy stuff knocking about
And what about the next ten years? You’re keen. The excellent chaps at Domino Records have commissioned a Northern Soul album drawing on the best 455 spun at the club and the recently introduced membership scheme continues apace. There's even a range of Divine clothing, just like the super-clubs. Anything else? Get down early, Divine has a bit of a following, and ten years' worth of fans should make for a pretty hefty queue.
