Sunday afternoons can be horrible, boring ordeals, as, once the papers are read and the kids' telly has finished, there is precious little to do all day. The Sunday Social, brought to you by the good folk at The Arches, looks set to solve the problem in one fell swoop. lack Mottram investigates.

'w‘ «a. -.‘ ’2. What's it all about then? On the first Sunday of the month, from 3pm ’til 11pm, The Arches is transformed into a softly lit comfort zone, designed for chatting, grabbing a bite to eat and catching a wide range of arts-based business.

'Arts-based business' - what's that supposed to mean? Well, the first event last month featured a string ensemble, house DJ and live jazz funk, all overlayed with top-notch visuals. Essentially, we're talking a laid-back Exploding Plastic Inevitable for the let century. Or something.

One for the chinstrokers then Not at all. The idea is to recreate the ambience of a Sunday relaxing in your living room. Assuming your living room is a tastefully appointed multimedia gallery, and you have someone on hand to serve up crépes and croissants.

So what's lined up for the next one? Another smorgasboard of quality entertainment, with Ninja Tune stalwarts Cinematic Orchestra as headliners. Live support comes in the form of Invention Ensemble, a ten~piece orchestra, plus relaxed DJ sets courtesy of Shu lliratu and Twitch.

What about the multimedia angle? Give me a chance. Justin Eade (aka Glimpse) is set to provide a reminder of the glorious weather outside with projections centring around the recent Big Chill event in Cairo. There's also a chance to catch some rare and previously unseen promo clips for tracks by the cream of contemporary electronica, including Laurent Garnier, To Rococo Rot and Squarepusher.

Anything else we should know? This certainly isn’t your bog standard club, so it doesn't draw an aver. " crowd. The debut event saw everyt; - "3m toddlers to the aged having a W! .ile of a time,
