MUSICAL SHOWCASE MultiFunktion Glasgow: Alaska, Sat 27 May.
Alaska has been upping the clubbing ante in the last few months. Tangent’s brand of funked-up house has settled in nicely to the Friday night slot. Ultima, Glasgow's only night exclusively devoted to music from the 21st century, is packing the kids in every month and Straight Ahead's funk, soul and jazz residency is now entering its second year.
In celebration of the club's diverse music policy, which rests on quality, rather than blinkered adherence to a particular genre, the flagship MultiFunktion showcase is set to go monthly. Essentially, the night does what it says on the tin, with residents Muchail, Stuart Freaks and Michael Peck taking it in turns to highlight their individual styles, so that each event features a different bias. This something-for-everyone game plan is also reflected in the guests booked. The Easter Sunday bash, for example, featured Mark Rae - one half of Grand Central stalwarts Rae And Christian — who keeps it fairly real with the kind of soulful underground hip hop found on the duo's production collaborations with the likes of Jehru The Damaja and The Jungle Brothers.
The first of the monthly events, meanwhile, maintains the Manchester link, but ditches hip hop in favour of Marc Rowlands' expert blend of disco- tinged house buoyed up with a dash of retro-

electronica. Resident at the superb HomoElectric, the club that provided a much needed shot in the arm for the increasingly stagnant Canal Street scene. Rowlands fits the eclectic MultiFunktion ethos perfectly, thanks to his club‘s refusal to be pigeon-holed in terms of both music and sexual preference.
MultiFunktion, then, ought to be a hit with lovers of all kinds of dance music. and offers a chance to catch something out of the ordinary. while simultaneously offering a bit of what you prefer. As for the dress code, the promoters suggest, tongue firmly in cheek, that you wear your heart on your sleeve. (Jack Mottram)
