New Artists A new gallery space for Glasgow showcases the work of up-and- coming artists from Glasgow and the rest of Scotland. The work encompasses a variety of media from sculpture and textile design to paintings and jewellery, changing the line-up on a monthly basis.

A tour of the Homes For The Future site, a £10 million housing development comprising 100 homes all designed by leading architects from around the world. Both public and private housing has been constructed, created with the aim of combining innovative architecture with issues of urban renewal. Home Until Sun 24 Oct. To complement the Homes For The Future, this exhibition looks at the project in the context of house building in the 20th century and addresses ifrlarious aspects of home design for the ture.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Converted from Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s first major public building and former offices of The Herald, this new venue is the home of Scotland’s centre for Architecture, Design and the City. Providing two main exhibition galleries and smaller display areas, there are facilities for conferences, education and IT suites, a shop and a cafe. On permanent display, the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre documents the life and work of Glasgow’s most famous architect-designer.
Vanity Cases By Philippe Starck Until Sun 31 Oct. A retrospective of the work of style guru Philippe Starck, a prodigious designer in the 805 who shows no sign of slowing down. The exhibition features examples of his designs in miniaturised form, displayed in specially made vanity cases. Rebuilding Lives Until Fri 29 Oct. A look at how social attitudes towards people with learning disabilities have been reflected in an ‘architecture of exclusion’.
Please Touch Until Sun 9 Jan. Seven contemporary UK artists including Rachel Whiteread, Martin Boyce, Richard Wentworth and Julian Opie design a piece of furniture which in turn has been taken to prototype for the Glasgow Collection by SCP. Part of Glasgow 1 999.
First Batch: The Glasgow Collection Until Sun 9 Jan. Set up as part of the Glasgow 1999 celebrations, The Glasgow Collection has funded a range of new design products, taking them to prototype stage and beyond. Over 40 projects by emerging and established designers from Glasgow and beyond feature in the display. Included is ‘Chasm Chair’ designed by Glasgow-based designers One Foot Taller, a digital hand-drum by GSA graduate Ben Smith and plastic seatin for children by Craig Whittet. The Sfiape 0f Colour: RED Until Sun 16 Jan. The cultural and psychological meanings of the colour red are explored in this collection of objects that includes everything from a Swiss Army knife, a telephone box, Coca Cola, a Butlin’s Red Coat and a Ducati 9OOSS red motorbike. Working City DEGW Until Fri 5 Nov. An exhibition of ideas from leading young architects and designers who were challenged to investigate the future of living and working in Glasgow’s city centre.
International Cafe Challenge Fri 22-Tue 26 Oct. A workshop for international young designers with the brief to design an imaginary cafe in four days. The students will work with professional designers and the results of this session will be displayed in the Lighthouse’s Education Gallery.
