. x. .1” 5." 1 Name? Andrea Parker. Who is she? DJ, recording artist, singer,» a producer and cellist. -- A bit oiva busy bee then? Semewhat. Andrea’s just returned from a tour Dling in the underground clubs in Germany. Her mix album in the prestigious lK7 series, 0} Kicks, has received much critical acclaim. Her own, long awaited album, Kiss My Arp, will be released by Mo‘ Wax early in 1999. And she‘s visiting Club 69 in Paisley on 14 Nov. Anything interesting in the record bag? ’There's lots of old-school electro. Man Parish, C.O.D., Nucleus, and then there's a lot more of what l call proper 905-styie electro like Panic Tracks and
the new Underground Resistance.’
What is an Andrea Parker-DJ set like? 'I always try and build from hip hop electro into heavier techno, but it is all very 808 drum machine-orientated. But i still can’t help playing my classics, like Car! Craig‘s "Desire", in every set. We even got a back~up of that. i like to get all different styles into one set. l‘m a huge fan of the tougher style of electro at the moment. l play a lot of that.‘ Define electro: 'Electro started back in the 805. it's lots of 808 drum machine with strange vocoders and stuff going through it. t like the stiffness and the off-beat of electro. and a lot of it is really, really funky.’
How about that album? Kiss My Arp is considerably different. Although those electro beats run through it, this is down tempo stuff which slinks in, low and melancholy, from the leftfield. Andrea’s voice is somewhat ethereal and the orchestrations are well lush. Home listening it most certainly is, althOugh Andrea has a couple of instrumental dub plates from it which she plays out. What‘s an 'Arp‘ when it’s at home? Glad you asked. It’s an ancient kind of analogue synthesiser. Hence the saying 'it came in with the Arp’. When they were built, they would have cost the same as a home to buy. Now they tester in studios, waiting for the likes of Andrea to make beautiful music on them. (Thom Dibdiri)
