Real Ale Pubs
This is by no means a comprehensive list of bars in Edinburgh and Glasgow that sell real ale but it is a guide to the more well known cask conditioned hostelries.
Glasgow
I Aragon Byres Road. 339 3252. Owned by Scottish and Newcastle. they obviously have the lion's share when it comes to beers in this traditional Scot‘s pub. Together with the archetypal old men. students gather here to sup from a range which takes in Theakston‘s Best. Theakston‘s XB. Directors and Pedigree. These are complemented by a good line in bottled Belgian beers and a puggie. should you tire of drinking away your money.
I Babbity Bowster Blackfriars Street. 552 5055. Handy for Strathclyde Uni residencies. this Georgian-style pub boasting huge windows and a coal fire is a cosy option. Especially if it’s serious drinking you're after. without the distractions ofTV. fruit machines and
juke boxes. Popular among professionals
and students they do a good line in whiskies and real ales. featuring core offerings from Maclay's. with 70/-. 80/- and Hopscotch on tap.
I Blacktriars Bell Street. 552 5924. Popular among ‘anyone who appreciates a good pint‘. they take their beer seriously at Blackfriars. Arrol’s 80/- and Deuchar's ll’A feature permanently alongside four guest ales. and the informal bistro-style bar offers a laid-back setting in which to appreciate their regular live jazz and comedy nights.
I Bon Accord North Street. 248 4427. Not one for the indecisive. this dark. traditional looking pub prides itselfon its real ales with four house beers and eight regularly changing guests to choose from. lncluded in the line-up are Theakston‘s Best. Younger's No 3 and McEwan‘s 80/-. I Brewery Tap Sauchiehall Street. 339 8866. It may have a reputation for being studenty. but this relaxed. informal boozer generally caters for an assortment of regulars and professionals. Despite
housing two bar areas it’s always pretty mobbed. its strength lying in the range of malt whiskies and cask ales on offer. with the likes of Belhaven 60/-. Arrol‘s 80/- and Black Sheep Bitter. They hold a beer festival every November. host live jazz nights. like their sister bar Blackfn'ars. and will be serving up the industrial strength Harviestoun Noveau (ll per cent ABV) as a mind-blowing treat this Hogmanay.
I Dr Thirsty’s Alehotrse Old Dumbarton Road. 334 4197. Real ale is the name of the game in this friendly local. :1 p0pular post-work fuel stop. A variety of mainstay ales. including Bass and Maclay’s keep the regulars coming back and the guest pumps are ever-changing with Hopscotch and Harvest Fresh among favourites.
I Mitre Brunswick Street. 552 3764. Tucked away in a lane off Argyle Street. this cosy. fn'endly bar attracts everyone — young and old. rich and poor. A definite Scots bias is evident when it comes to the beer pumps with Belhaven among the favourites. In addition to the house offen'ng. Mitre Merchant Ale. there’s Belhaven 80/-. St Andrew’s Ale and various guests and a juke box to accompany your supping.
I Ritz North Street. 226 4419. The comfy. traditional touch is evident in this boozer. situated by Charing Cross. Promoting ale consumption by the gallon there's eight to choose from including Old Speckled Hen. Theakston’s Best and Marston’s Pedigree as well as guests mainly from Caledonian. A TV screen makes it popular on big match days and there‘s regular folk bands and a quiz night every Monday.
I Three Judges Dumbarton Road. 337 3055. A fairly mature bunch of regulars gather to soak in beer and the crack in this local boozer which has a tremendous reputation among those who know and appreciate real ale. Owned by Maclay's. they obviously dominate the pumps with their own Broadsword. 80/- and Hopscotch. while guest beers are a more varied bunch.
