FOOTBALL PREMIER ATTRACTIONS
long gone are the days when sports could be categorised according to season — football, rugby, cricket and the rest have gone the way of soft fruit and are now available year round. However, after a long summer of transfer dealings, even the most dedicated football fan could be forgiven for wondering which players will be playing where as the league programme gets ready to kick off on 10 August.
Rangers’ cheque book was first out of the starting blocks with a series of audacious, but ultimately unsuccessful bids for some of the biggest stars in the italian Serie A. In the end, the Scottish Champions had to settle for lower profile signings in the shape of German midfielder Jorg Albertz, for whom they paid Hamburg over £4 million, and the Swedish internationalist Joachim Biorkiand.
Celtic more or less managed to avoid signing difficulties, bringing rated England ‘B’ internationalist Alan Stubbs from Bolton at a cost of £3.5 million, while italian midfielder Paulo Di Canio was obtained from Serie A champions, A.C. Milan, for only £1 million. On the minus side, however, the Bhoys lost the services of John Collins. Frozen out of the first team toward the end of last season, Collins made the most of the Bosman ruling with a free move to Monaco after his contract ran out.

between European clubs, had an unfortunate impact on other Premier Division teams. Motherwell lost the services of Rob McKinnon; Hearts failed to persuade Allan Johnstone not to follow Collins into French football; and Dundee United couldn’t hold on to their talented utility player Christian Dailly or unsettled striker David Hannah.
Similarly, Aberdeen waved goodbye to Gary Smith, but made an early move to sign Bulgarian internationalist ilian ltiriakov. Meanwhile, Raith Rovers will struggle to maintain their form after their former manager Jimmy iiichoi scooped three of their best players - Steve Crawford, Jason Dair and Dave Sinclair - for Millwall.
