l KELSO RAM SALES Fri 8, mam—6.30pm. Springwood Park, Kelso. Free. Last year, over 7,000 breeding rams were sold individually in the eighteen rings: one every four and a half seconds! But it is not just the spectacle of the sale that makes this atop Days Out recommendation. There’s a social side to the largest one-day ram sale in the world, held under nearly one mile of canvas. Besides the trade stands selling all kinds of country paraphernalia there is catering and the all-important beer tents. But be warned: don’t get too tipsy and go winking at that smashing Bluefaced Leicester or you might just end up taking him home with you.

Linton. There will be walks. both self-led and guided. of various lengths every day. The guided walks have all been planned with a theme and will be led by someone knowledgeable in local history. archaeology or wildlife. livery evening there will be talks in West Linton at 7pm. The Festival starts with an Activity Day at Cottage Fartn on Sat 9, with a Country Fair there on Sun 10 ( 10am—5pm). Entry to both events is £5 per car. Surprisingly. no price is given for those on foot.

I DOORS OPEN DAY Sat 9/Sun 10, Sat 16/Sun 17. Various venues in 23 towns around the country. Full details of local open doors are generally available from local tourist information offices and the Scottish Civic Trust (0141 221 1466) has contact numbers for local coordinators. The towns, cities and districts participating this year are Aberdeen, Alloa, Banff, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Clydesdale, Cumbernauld, Dumfries, Dundee, Dunfennline, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Glasgow, Cordon, Hamilton/MotherwelI/Strathaven, lnverclyde, lnverness, Kirkcaldy, Linlithgow, N.E. Fife, Paisley, Perth, Stirling and Tain. Among the highlights are Southness Lighthouse near Whithom in Dumfries and a Masonic Temple in Aberdeen. St Matthews Church of the Nazerene pictured above was built in 1906 and provides a good example of Art Nouveau architecture to rival Mackintosh. The interior is even better, with ‘frenzied’
woodwork and soaring roof trusses.
