I Corrieyairack Challenge Hill Race Race starts 1 lam from Fort Augustus Abbey. Info: 0131 317 7320. They breed them tough in the Highlands which is just as well for this race: a seventeen-mile hill run followed by a 23-mile cycle. The fastest competitors will be staggering into Kincraig Village around 2.30pm. Last year 120 runners raised over £12,000 for charity.

I Tay Marathon Start Dunkclil Bridge. noon. The creme (It' [a ('I'i'nlt' of Scotland's long distance canoers will be converging on Dunkeld psyched up to paddle all the way down to Perth — a whopping 23 miles. If it pours with rain in the week preceeding the race then the best competitors will be crossing the finishing line in under two hours; if the weather stays dry and the river level is low then the race will take up to three hours.

GOING FOR GOLD ON THE GREEN
Only a week separates the two most
3 important competitions in the British
; golfing calendar. Only the mouth of
the River Tay physically separates the courses that they are going to be
played on. St Andrews, the historic home of 9011, will take media centre stage between 16—23 July when the world’s best golfers compete for the British Open Championship and Carnoustie, in Angus, just across the water, will play host to the Scottish Open between 12-15 July.
One man who believes that it might not be long before the Carnoustie course supercedes St Andrews in the
caddy master, Martin Roy: ‘St Andrews may be the mecca of golf with all its wonderful history but there is no
doubt that Carnoustie is harder to play i
than St Andrews. We have founded our
name on being one oi the toughest links golf courses in the world,’ he claims.
A links 9011 course is one that is beside or near the sea. They pose
. ditticulties to players because of 5 rough ground and the breezes that
blow in from the sea. Hoy believes that anyone who can master the especially treacherous nature of the Carnoustie
I course is a great player.
‘Playing on links is basically a battle against the elements,’ he enthuses.
‘It’s very difficult to play against an
unpredictable wind so people come to play Carnoustie in order to improve

we like to let nature take its course. For instance, our bunkers - originally they weren’t tilled with sand; they were just raised bits of ground. History has it that sheep used to shelter themselves from wind behind these mounds. Of course they ate the grass and in time the ground was eroded into sandy bunkers.’ Fore legs good, I guess. I SCU Scottish Championships Sprint Meadowbank Stadium. Edinburgh. 10am. Free. The 45th annual race of the Scottish Cycling Union sees around 40
competitors pedalling for all they're worth
around the hard track at Meadowbank. The real action in each race comes in the final 200 metres; up till then the cyclists trundle around at praCtically a walking pace. jostling for a good tactical position before sprinting for the finish at speeds of up to 40mph.
