headliners. and is their name a red herring? Perhaps they just are ‘a shambles’ rather than being in any way ‘shambling’. The J ades, however, play an awkward funk-pop that seems to be coming around ten years too late to create any kind of a fuss.

I Kith And Kin (TBC) Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. Cross-cultural fusions of rock, cajun. ceilidh and dub, with a new saxophonist expanding their horizons. Possible support from Pure Blind Panic

I The Kleptomaniacs Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm.

WEDNESDAY 18 Glasgow

I The Ruby Suit, saidllorence and Worldwide Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens, 339 9784. Sublime pop from Edinburgh‘s Ruby Suit, with cuter. poppier sounds from the up-and-coming saidflorence and old Worldwide still plugging away in a somewhat harder vein.

I Auntie Rose Cotton Club, Scott Street, 332 0712. 8pm. £3 (student concession available). Having already packed out Rooftops and the Cotton Club once before, Auntie Rose reactivate their energetic rock and funk grooves. Perhaps not the ‘Metallica meets EMF' combination that‘s been cited in the past, but worth checking out nonetheless.

I Live Music RGs. Queen Street, 221 2200. 10pm. Free. A pre-Christmas set from special mystery guests.

Edinburgh

I A Whole New Jungle. The Walking Gardens and The Clumsy Lovers Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. AboutThe Walking Gardens we’re able to say nothing, though both A Whole New Jungle and The Clumsy Lovers have proved to be worthy additions to the local live scene.

Edinburgh

I The Silencers Queen‘s Hall, South Clerk Street, 668 2019. 7.30pm. £7 plus booking fee. From slightly shaky beginnings— underwhelming live presence, and a debut album that suggested the band would be mired in cliche before they even got properly started The Silencers have matured for a second album that’s far more inventive than most of us dared to suspect. Doing well in Europe, and probably set to become even more solidly established in Scotland than they are already, but one can imagine from listening to The Silencers that those south of the border will be a while catchingon. I The Fuzztones and Mansell Storm Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. Dedicated and nigh-legendary New York/LA garage psychedelicists with albums like Lysergic Emanations to their credit, who seem to

play Vox instruments exclusively, for that

authentic 60$ sound, y’understand, and were so enamoured of the banned cough syrup Romilar D that they own upto writing their most recent album, Braindrops, under its influence. Founder member Rudi Protrudi last year starred in a ‘vampire/sex’ movie, Night Tour, said to be based on his own life. Crazy guys, crazy habits.

I Better Ways Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. £1. See Wed 11.

I Custard Bones and UVU Purple Ohm Club, Calton Studios (upstairs), Calton Road, 556 7066. 8pm—3.30am. £2.50. The first week of a new club featuring indie, psychedelic and Sub Pop-type sounds is spiced up by three live bands who should fit into that mood nicely (third band still to be confirmed).

I Red Hot And Blue Platform One. Rutland Street, 225 2433. 9pm. Free. Rock‘n’roll. I Charlie And Her Sheepdogs Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free.
