Edinburgh
I Andy Sheppard In Co-Motion Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8.30pm. £8.50. £7.50. £6; concessions (£4) on door if available. Opinion has been varied on Andy Sheppard's new electric outfit. but I was well impressed when I heard them in Dundee earlier this summer. although reports suggested their Glasgow Jazz
Festival gig did not achieve quite the same energy levels. What struck me most was that the talk of a fusion band was a little misleading; what Andy has put together seemed much more an improvising jazz outfit using a fusion-style instrumental line-up. The music drew on both acoustic jazz and electric jazz-funk sources woven around typical Sheppard themes. and made a heady brew from the mixture. Since the Dundee visit was one of their earliest gigs. and their eponymous album on Antilles was recorded even earlier, it will be very interesting indeed to hear how they sound after six months of gigging. Andy is joined by Claude Deppa on trumpet. Steve Lodder on keyboards. Sylvan Richardson on six-string electric bass. and drummer Dave Adams.
