ROCK & BLUES MUSIC
THURSDAY 12 Glasgow
I Paul Young Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Sauchiehall Street. 6.30pm. SOLD OUT. A contemporary King of the Croon who has been allowed to get away with murder in the past because his gravelly larynx can penetrate further than most of his yuppie compadres. A great voice is no excuse for lacklustre material and — worse still — being boring.
I My Bloody Valentine. Teenage Fanclub and Shake Barrowland. Gallowgatc. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £6 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. See feature for MBV. A big-value night out made all the more intriguing by the fact that My Bloody Valentine haven't played live for so long and have. perhaps unwisely. given labelmates Teenage Fanclub the opportunity to wipe the floor with them. I The Corleones Polar. Pig and Firkin. Buchanan Street. 9pm. Free. Skaand dub-influenced sound from this local band.
I The Love Parade Glasgow School ofArt. Renfrew Street. 332 9797. Funky rock in sub-INXS mould.
I The Light Halt Bar. Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9pm. Free. A mixed bagof sounds. from bouncy commercial tunes to wah-wah grooves to exotic soaring guitar solos.

Edinburgh
I Sugar Bullet. Zulu Syndicate and Space Monkey Mafia Calton Studios. Calton Road. 556 7066. Anti-racism gigs like this and Goodbye Mr Mackenzie‘s recent Stirling show have been conspicuous by their absence for many years. so it‘s good to see the banner being unfurled once again. The eclectic Space Monkey Mafia (See Son 8) kick offproceedings. and rappers Zulu Syndicate are again playing with their live band. which seems to include a former Exploited bassist. Curious. Curiosity will probably be a major spur for punters checking out Sugar Bullet — as in. What are they really all about and why are Virgin Records finding it so tough to sell them to the public?
I Echo And The Bunnymen Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. See preview.

I Grin St James Oyster Bar. Calton Road. 557 2925. 9pm. Free. An acoustic set from a regularly-gigging band of an only slightly different name.
FRIDAY13 Glasgow
I Hunrig Barrowland. Gallowgatc. 552 4601 . 7.30pm. SOLD OUT. Runrig round off a pretty phenomenal year by anyone's standards with four triumphant sell-outs at one of Glasgow‘s oldest venues and one of Glasgow‘s newest. the point being probably that a certain larger hall is not to their liking. Music-loving Glasgow runs for shelter with hands over ears asthe Gael army bulldozers onwards.
I Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Trashcan Sinatras and The Lost Soul Band Strathclyde University Union. John Street. 552 1895. 8pm. This line-up of Scottish popsters and folksters for the University end ofterm all-nighter was still provisional at the time of going to press. Check with venue nearer the time. The Godless and Indigo Father will play the Mandela Bar.
I Spirea X. Zulu Syndicate and Static Glasgow Polytechnic. Cowcaddens Road. 3320681. 9pm—7am. €6(advance). Another end-of-term all-nighter. with a fine trio ofbands. Spirea X are. ofcourse. one of the most talked-about bands ofthe year. and their rather good debut album justified a lot ofthe hot air that had been vented about them. Edinburgh-based rappers Zulu Syndicate are running in their new live band and Static are still one ofthe great guitar-band hopes for '92. Be there.
I Echo And The Bunnymen King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £5. See preview.

I Van Morrison SECC. Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. £14. £1 1. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 2264679. A late addition for the rotund Greatest Living Irishman. whose growl is still a sweet sound in many a musician‘s ear. and who can be blamed for all the lame pseudo-folk groups who have come after him.
I Runrig Barrowland. Gallowgatc. 552 4601. 7.30pm. SOLD OUT. See Fri 13. I Hole, Therapy? and Daisy Chainsaw Mayfair. Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872.

I Marillion Barrowland. Gallowgatc. 552
4601. 7.30pm.£11 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Marillion seem to exist in a vacuum. Their time capsule is still lodged in the early 705 and with hoardes of loyal fans demanding more of the same familiar recipe there‘s no incentive to change. so no new fans either. just a vicious circle ofincreasing insularity. Which is why everyone else sensibly ignores them.
