I A Certain Ratio King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £5.50. A Certain Ratio can rightly claim to have lent a guiding hand in the development ofwhite funk in this country over the past decade. With a precedent like theirs. it‘s no surprise that Manchester has also thrown up the likes of the Happy Mondays. Their most recent stuffis sounding as groovlicious as ever.
I The Naked Flames Nice‘n‘Sleazy, Sauchiehall Street. 10pm. Free. New Glasgow band with a sound that encompasses a few of the current indie trappings.

This Dundee band have an EP, Tripping Of The Colours. and an album First Divinity A venue out now, both produced by Robin Guthrie and betraying strong Cocteaus‘ influences.

I Bunrig Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. SOLD OUT. The band of the year cap their annus mirabilis with an intimate show in a cosy venue (ie one with a roof) and the publication of Tom Morton‘s rockography, if you will. Going Home. A roof-raising celebration is guaranteed.

Far from being disbanded. as some had thought, Food Records‘ contribution to grebo culture are still slogging up and down Britain‘s highways. They could have been bigger than Zodiac Mindwarp. . .in fact. without adoubt, they are.
I The Mutiny Strings Subway. Cowgate. They‘ve taken us to task for pointingout their ‘epic‘ tendencies in the past. butwhat the hell? We meant it in a nice way. Guitarist Hugh Duggie and drummer Martin Fleming spent six months co-writing and playing on the Lowlife album, San Anrorium. last year.

Riccarton Campus, 449 5111. Edinburgh guitar combo (with new keyboard player) stimulating record company interest in London after three years of frequent gigging up here and their recent far-from-disposable EP. Inclined to be a bit heavy-handed in their presentation, but they‘re learning.

I Bad Manners and Space Monkey Malia Calton Studios, Calton Road, 5567066. 9pm. £6. Yes, indeed, still treadingthe boards, and no doubt resisting any temptations to go all contemporary on us. Though it’s been many years since Bad Manners had a hit, the grassroots support for Buster Bloodvessel and his merry crew is still strong. The eight-piece Space Monkey Mafia (which includes former members of Bananas) pump out an eclectic blend of reggae. house and African styles.
I Carcass and End Of City Moshpit. Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. A cheery evening‘s entertainment from thrash metal band Carcass who have recently been cleared of obscenity charges. Their album Necrotism — Descanring The lnsalubrious is every bit as unsavoury as its anatomically precise titles suggest. Local thrashers End Of City sound like a breeze in comparison.

A coupling made in heaven - the laconic Bernard Sumner and the dexterous Johnny Marr — who succeeded in bringing us one of the best singles of the year with ‘Get the Message‘ and an album whose excellence didn't help dispel rumours that New Order were splitting up for good. You could say there is a bit of a buzz about this gig, ifyou wanted to understate the case grossly.

Green Day are the latest mosh-inducing band to emerge from Frisco‘s fertile Bay Area. compared with Husker Du. Bad Religion. Leatherface and Snuff (and also. more tenuously. A benefit event for eleven-year-old bone-cancer sufferer Adam Weir and the Yorkhill unit treating him, which has so far incurred no expense whatsoever. Artists, crew. venue. have all lent their services for nothing. Marcha Fresca provide the stomping musical interlude while lchi Ni San are secretively setting up a fashion show which promises some great surprises.
I Angel Heart RGs. Queen Street. 221 2200. 10pm. Free. Some well-()TF antics when Angel Heart take the stage. However. tonight‘s gig will be an acoustic set. so it‘s doubtful ifthey‘ll repeat their encore-in-the-scud exploits of the recent KingTut‘s gig.
