I EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
I Scotland v San Marino llampden Park. Glasgow. 2.30pm. ‘Aye. but they area quality team considering they come from a country the size of Castlemilk.‘ You can almost hear Andy's excuses already can‘t you? Scotland need to score a hatful of goals against the Italian part-timers to have any hope of qualifying for the finals in Sweden. The ‘result‘ of2-(l which they got in San Marino simply will not be enough.

\ \§.
In spite of the unlucky result in Bucharest, the Scottish lootball team only has itself to blame il it doesn’t reach the European Championship linal stages in Sweden. That Romania game was characterised by one at the most delensively orientated Scottish teams you’re ever likely to see. The night ol Sunday 13 October at Hampden should be a ditlerent story.
San Marino held the Scots lor an embarrassing length ol time when the two teams met in the principality. At the time, everybody thought that the meagre two goals which were scored (hall of the average which the part-timers usually concede) would come back to haunt the Scots. And so it has proved.
ll Switzerland beat Romania, Scotland can lorget about the linals
SAN PANNING

Any Goram, who hopelully will be a spectator against San Marino.
whatever happens at Hampden, but it the Swiss should draw, then Scotland will have to lire eleven past the Italians in order to make it to Sweden. ll more had been scored in the first San Marino game and, for example, the target was only live or six, then the task may not seem so daunting.
There is the additional lactor of Romania. While every Scotwill be rooting lor the east Europeans against the Swiss, it they should win and then can do so again in Bulgaria a week later, then they will probably reach the linal stages as a result or a superior goal dilterence to Scotland. Once again, that spectre ol the 2—0 result in San Marino appears in lull view. (Philip Parr)
