Design Alter Dark -The Story 0i Dancelloor Style: Cynthia Rose (Thames and Hudson) To summarise and comment upon British street style overthe last ten years would seem a tall order indeed. That Rose brings together the diverse threads of movements that seem at llrst glance unconnected is, therelore, no small achievement. The book splits itself into two sections; the llrst (and perhaps most interesting) tracing style trom a social history viewpoint, all the way lrom the Bolshevik inlluence on designers like David King with his cover designs lor City Limits and Neville Brody’s Bed Wedge logo through to the airocentric ragamuliin style of Clive Woodstock and the xerox art oi the likes at Mark Jackson and tan Wright. Each section is meticulously researched and on the whole the relationship between designers, musicians and club-goers makes lor iascinating reading. Rose’s theorising, while elevating the book from coiiee table lodder, can occasionally tall into the trap ol intellectualising a phenomenon that thrives on spontanaeity and a disregard tor established rules.
The second section oi the book looks at eleven designers in detail. Each designer works in very diilerent lields and Rose’s approach - minimal text and extensive illustration - highlights the similarities while at the same time giving a clear resume oi state-ol-the-art graphic design, whether it’s the computer graphics ol
