Rosemary Beaton: Recent Oils and Drawings at Art trom the Billiard Room until 3Jul.
Alter tripping around the cluttered jeweller's you are torced to navigate en route to the Mackintosh-designed Billiard Room, it's a reliel to escape the Mickey Mouse ceramics and precariously balanced crystal decanters. finally coming up tor air in
Rosemary Beaton's carnival of colour.
in fluorescent pastels and paints as bright as a children's playground, Beaton reveals herself to be a true child 01 the 60s, with a penchant for musicians, gigs and guitars. Her subjects include drummers, bass players and jazz men, playng in worlds ol throbbing colour. And the music? Definitely loud. Her exploration at a musician's state of mind in ‘Shit nervous and I can't relax’ is a vast abstract at such vibrancy that it almost twitches oil the page. Similarly, ‘Man with Tattoo‘, in pastel and gouache,
PSYCHEDELIC OEUVRES
uses sensuous black line and a colour-bruised tace to show the vulnerability ot hersubject, who stares, childlike, out of a Schiaperelli background. Her models are not beautilul people- more like the Pogues than Bros, caught unawares in mid-bar.
Beaton’s eye for a good tune is most evident in a number at studies she has done 01 George Melly. See him here as never belore, with a huge bulbous nose and a bright green and orange pin-striped suit, looking like something out of Wacky Races. Even Bobby
: Wishart is whisked into the realms ol ' the sublime with a lime jacket against a
blue background, his bass player reduced to a mere red outline. Winner ot the John Player Portrait Award for
which she painted Robin Day, herwork
is littered with tips and lovehearts and is tlamboyant but never frivolous. Is she a nouveau hippy? Just think Egon
Schiele on acid. (Beatrice Colin)
