Ernst Wilhelm Nay: Paintings and Drawings 1928-1968 Sat 8 Jun—21 Jul. A central figure in the development of abstract art in post-war Germany, this is the first major retrospective of Nay's work in Britain, showing his progression from the Expressionist paintings of the 19305 to the development of a more personal, abstract style. Declared ‘degenerate‘ by the German authorities in 1937, Nay was prevented from showing his work for some years. Nevertheless. he went on to create some of his most exuberant, memorable worksin the 1950s.

PANORAMAS, PRIZES AND PERUVIANS
Prix Niepce 1955-1990, French Institute, Edinburgh, until Fri 7 Jun. Soon aiter he developed the first permanent photograph in 1826, Joseph-Nicephore Niepce passed the baton to Daguerre whose ingenuity set photography on its way. in 1955 the Prlx Niepce was created as a kind oi homage to the inventor. Awarded annually, the prize is open to any aspiring or established proiesslonal photographer under the age oi iorty and living in France.
As a retrospective, this exhibition is by nature eclectic. Though curator Rene Cambier tailed to persuade every recipient to take part, enough are represented to make this a sweeping coflecnon.
There is a deiightiully ambiguous photograph by Jean Garet (1964). A young couple, the woman in a mini skirt, are canoodling as they watch a cruise ship that might be docking or else preparing to set sail. Three paces behind them stand an old couple, apart and hunched. Hand pressed against her side, the old woman is staring at the young lovers with envy or disapproval or maybe both.

Always the aim is to engage, even it that means to shock. A photograph by Thierry Girard (1984) leaps out lrom the others in the main room. Against a rocky landscape that is slightly blurred, a woman with strong hands gathers up her loose garment so that one breast is showing. Her head is outside the picture.
There is, oi course,the usual smattering at old iavourites like wizened Peruvians squatting in clay huts or earnest Orthodox Jews tottering about in the streets oi Jerusalem. Yet such images survive as popular cliches tor the simple reason that their power to evoke does not wear oii. They are just as alluring the hundredth time around.
Cambier rightly reiers to the exhibition as a panorama. The photographs have been taken over 35 years and throughout the world. Black and white is the stock-and-trade but there is also a handiul oi colour works, including a couple oi National Geographic-type nature shots. There is, however, no theme. The Prlx Niepce has never been about telling people

Recent acquisitions include Studies of Paws, the first drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452—1519) to enter a Scottish collection.
Drawings and Watercolours trom the National Monuments Record at Scotland Until 28 July. Set up during the Second World War, the Monuments Record's briefwas to make an emergency survey of Scotland's historical buildings, in case they were destroyed by bombs. Fifty years on, the archive has been greatly enriched by collecting and donations. The earliest topographical drawing dates back to the late 17th century, other drawings feature designs for castles, kirks, mills and lighthouses.
