Printmaking in Paris 1900-1940, Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow until Thurs 11 Jul.

Boasting names such as Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Miro, Emstand Dali this exhibition sets up expectations which are not entirely met.

In the llrst 40 years oi this century Parisian dealers and publishers led the thriving art market by commissioning leading artists to make prints which were then issued in limited editions. This selection at prints is largely that ol the coilectorJames McCalIum, which he giited to the Hunterian between 1939 and 1948. Within this context, it is no surprise that the prints are small in scale, predominantly etching and thereiore no least oi colour.

Two etchings by Picasso recall his early paintings; the blackened textures and scored marks aptly describe images at poverty. In contrast, he uses soft ground etching to depict Harlequin's Family and Two Nude Figures. Picasso chose techniques I which dramatically described his I subjects as is seen in the vigorous

scratched cross-hatching in Bull Attacking a Horse.

There are several artists represented who were recognised as accomplished in their own day, but who have since been iorgotten. Many oi these artists such as Kisiing, Laboureur, Gromaire and Hecht use the language oi printmaking rather more imaginatively than better known painters such as Leger, Braque, Duly, Chagall and Vlaminck. Even the sensuality oi Matisse’s painting is lost in monochromatic Iithos oi a Dancer and an Ddalisque, but he re-creates it in a magical linocul, Bather with Necklace. His vast mural, The Dance, is reduced to a small Iitho tor a Livre d’Artiste, but again the print ihcks the painting’s dynamism and colour.

Surrealists such as Dali, Mini, and Ernst use printmaking to create wondrous metamorphosing creatures. Many oi these prints iascinate. but the catalogue over-intellectuaiises and neglects the importance ol the eye being excited. (Sarah Knox)
