IThe National Galleries 01 Scotland have announced the purchase of two works. one by Surrealist Joan Miro, entitled Maremité and the other a Leonardo da Vinci drawing— Studies of Paws of a Dog or a Wolf. The drawing by da Vinci (1452-1519) was bought for £670,000 with a contribution of £100.00() from the National Art Collections Fund. It seems to be one ofa number ofstudies da Vinci made for a planned study of comparative anatomy and depicts seven sets of wolf‘s paws. Maremr'ré is to be paid for Over the next three years. again with a grant from the National Art Collections Fund and from the National Heritage Memorial. The painting is typical of Miré‘s obsession with dream imagery and the unconscious. and has been on loan to Gallery of
Modern Art since 1982. I The Fringe Dttice in Edinburgh‘s High Street recently unveiled the latest innovative artwork to grace their front window. Saddle Up, Saddle Up is a mechanically operated painting by Alistair Wallace, with moving parts, lights and an inch-high gun-toting cowboy.

l George Wyllle: Sculrture Jubilee 1966-1991 (Third Eye Centre £7.95) The book of the very successful Mayfest show. following the man from war service in the navy to the founding ofScul?ture and all that followed: making bards for the Berlin Wall. setting fire to a straw locomotive and sailing into New York on the Paper Boat. Beautifully illustrated and very reasonably priced.
I Ditted Robert McLaughlan (Mainstream £14.99) A colourful, readable book which reveals the range of objers d’art given to Glasgow University over the last 500 years, and something of the personalities of the givers- who include William Hunter. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and James Whistler. Comprehensive illustrations and historical background make it a useful reference book and a‘guide to the collection.

Stanley Spencer: The Apotheosis of Love Until 16Jun. A centenary tributeto Stanley Spencer ( 1891-1959). this is the first exhibition to realise Spencer's ‘Church House‘ project in which he hoped to fuse religion and worldliness. Some of his most striking works depict the Resurrection against a Glaswegian backdrop.
John Buckland Wright (1897-1954) Until 9 Jun. An important British printmaker represented here through his 19205 work. surrealist images of the 1930s and copper and wood engravings which celebrate the female form with affection and lyrical sensuality.
New Arts Season: Hong Sam-Dam Until 16 Jun. A political prisoner in South Korea. much of Hong‘s work was destroyed at the time of his arrest because ofits ‘subversive‘ promotion ofdemocracy. human rights and the reunification of North and South Korea, but some prints and hangings. depicting recent historical events. still survive. The prints in this exhibition were bought by Glasgow Museums through Amnesty International. Contemporary Art for Kelvlngrove Extended until 30 Jun. John Byrne. Ken Currie.
