But it a child has hearing ditliculties there’s often no choice at all. So it’s heartening to know that this year, in Edinburgh at least, there’s a production incorporating sign language. THE MOONCHILD

a frantic lirst year with The Moonchild which launched the troupe in October 1989. Since then they have been periorming in theatres, community centres and schools in Scotland, aiming to provide ‘real drama’ for young audiences, and giving many children an introduction to live theatre. The Moonchild by Chris Craig is based on a traditional Japanese lollt-tale about a young girl, Yugao, who has fallen from the moon. Unless she is wooed by a brave warrior who can only win her by performing impossible tasks, she will become the new moon. Aimed at children between live and eleven, it’s an enchanting play with a point, and quite distinct lrom the usual lestive lare.
