It’s a perfectly logical step. It you want to play a team game in a canoe, it has to be water polo and it you want to play water polo - without all that tiring swimming - you have to use canoes. Horses lend to drown. Although canoe water polo hasn't yet made it as an Olympic sport, participants insist it is only a matter of time. it's very popular in Britain. There is a network oi live leagues throughout the country, and on 2 Dec Wishaw will play proud host to canoes trom the Continent in an international tournament. Among the countries competing in this bizarre hybrid ot basketball and canoeing will be Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, . England and oi course the host nation
' Scofland.
The rules are quite straightiorward, only live paddlers are allowed in the pool per side, although there are no limits to the amount oi substitutions that can be made. The use oi paddles tor ‘Iliclting' is permissable though they cannot be used to strike the ball and a strict check is kept on this.

At the moment Scottish Canoe Polo is on the crest of a wave — Woodmill Canoe Club Ladies team are the current British Champions and the nation’s lemale team, at least, can look Iorward contidently to the Wishaw international. Barring any white water belore then they should be in with a good chance against the teams from France, Germany and Ireland who are crossing the ocean to cross paddles with them. At the moment, the sport seems to be back-paddling over a Iuture appearance in the Olympic schedule. A iinally agreed set at international rules has yet to be thrashed out. ‘lt’s not really a spectator sport yet,’ agreed Scottish Ladies' team captain Jackie Moore. ‘We only get people who are interested in canoeing coming along.‘ (Boss Parsons)
