TOUCHING PRINTS
Elspeth Lamb's ‘The Goat' irom ‘Touchstones'.
Elspeth Lamb: Touchstones, Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop.
According to my dictionary, a touchstone is a black stone used ior testing gold, and, by extension, has
come to mean any criterion by which things can be judged. It is the name that Elspeth Lamb has given to a series at prints iormed into a book; it is also the title oi her present exhibition at the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop (transierred irom Glasgow Print Studio).
The name suits the work. The book is oi lithographs in gold on black paper; the quality oi printing throughout the exhibition (mainly lithographs, with a iew monotypes) is excellent; and the slightly alchemal ieel to the title is reilected in the use oi symbols which resonate with the viewer, but which cannot be iuliy identiiied or ‘read’ in a literal iashion. There is a recurring heart shape which sprouts two horns, almost like birds heads; by reading the catalogue you can lind out that this was
one at a number oi symbols that Lamb
iound carved at a Greek Orthodox monastery, which, although still used, could no longer be explained (or perhaps could not be explained to the outsider?). This use oi ancient symbols which could provoke a response, while no longer carrying a iixed or dogmatic meaning, allows Lamb a ireedom that a more didactic use oi symbolism would iorbid. It also allows the viewer space ior reilection, questioning and tree-association when looking at the work.
This might imply that the show is quite cerebral. Although it does exercise the imagination, it is’aiso sensual, with a glorious use oi colour and texture. Some oi the prints (apart irom the book) are printed onto black paper, giving a rich, almost velvety undertone to the colours— in the same way that Braque sometimes used to paint onto a black, rather than white-primed canvas to add extra depth. It is an exhibition that can be enjoyed by both body and mind. (Hilary Robinson)
