The Art Machine, McLellan Galleries, Glasgow.
The Art Machine aims to celebrate the capacity of the human imagination in the visual arts. Designed specifically for children, it otters a cornucopia ot visual experiences and exhaustive opportunites through which children may express their imaginative power in an active role. The Art Machine is a concept aiming to provide children with hands-on experience of art and design. By enabling children to participate, it is to be hoped that a greater awareness of the value of art and design in their lives will be achieved. Forty artists were
commissioned to make work specially torthe exhibition and for children. This is only a small part at the overall structure which in its breadth and diversity is to be congratulated on taking children seriously as thinkers and creators oi fantasy worlds in which art is part of this dynamic process. The exhibition includes a history at children's toys through the ages (from tin soldiers to Batman), toys made by children for children, a history of drawing and art education. Collaborative work between schools and artists is shown. Of particular interest here is the installation by Garnock Academy using found, natural materials to meditate on the properties of wood, stone and leaves. The educational programme of workshops is excellent and there are specific areas within the gallery for hands on computer experience, climbing and quiet reading. The emphasis is on the role at play as an expression of creativity which will heighten critical and educational interest. The Art Machine is a product at the times-a gallery-based spectacle for children which educates through entertainment and ignores the cultural differences of the children who will be its spectators. Despite this, the noise, clamour and laughs at the children remind the adult that art need not be quite so serious and indeed can, occasionally, be enormous fun. Alter all, play is the world through which children meet and the chance to run amok in the McLellan is the privilege ol the very young. (Lorna J. Waite)
