GOING AWOL
Wols, Gallery at Modern Art, Edinburgh.
Little has been known oi Wols (Alired Otto Woligang Schultz) in this country until the tour at this exhibition. It is basically the same exhibition as was seen at Transmissions earlier in the year, only with a large added section oi oil paintings. The work is laid out according to medium, and thus, while the viewer can appreciate the huge diversity oi production, we do not have to make the leaps irom looking at photographs, to watercolours, to oils, to etchings, which can be distracting. Instead, each group is presented as a coherent whole.
Wols is bound to be a revelation to many. lie started work as a photographer, and was iniluenced by the surrealists in his choice oi objects and construction oi composition. With the exception oi a couple oi still lites, or examinations at the suriaces oi wet roads or torn billboards which are quite iormalist in eiiect, the element oi the bizarre or sinister is strong. This is
I most obvious in the images that take as their starting point the dismembered body oi a skinned rabbit. Elsewhere, 1 pieces oi garlic lying on a sheet oi metal with holes in iorms a lace, or a comic advertising character is seen in juxtaposition with a grieving angel on a gravestone.
The little etchings and watercolours are intriguing, hairy scribbly marks
that either never quite torm into, or obliterate, iigures, boats, animals. For all their delicacy and small size, some oi these works allude to grand themes oi creation, beginnings oi lite, and chaos. Wols’ tackling oi oil paint came relatively late in his short liie (he died oi iood poisoning when he was only 38). The results are not as convincing as the prints and drawings— what are often seen as ‘lesser' media, but which suited Wols’s purpose well. Given his huge output and capacity to exploit many media, had he lived longer it’s sure that he would have been placed iirmly in the cannon at German expressionist painters. As it is, we have these tine works which are not overshadowed by such a claim. (Hilary Robinson)
