ART & EXHIBITIONS
0K IN SCOTLAND
The Gallery oi Modern Art has chosen Dskar Kokoschka ior the lirst in a series oi exhibitions looking at the activities oi non-Scottish artists in Scotland. Kokoshka was an Austrian who moved to Czechoslovakia In 1934, away item the ever-encroaching Nazi policies, oi which he was an outspoken critic. in 1937 eight oi his paintings were included in the ‘Degenerate Art' exhibition in Munich; the iollowing year he came to Britain. lie also criticised many at Britain's war policies; he only escaped being interned, along with other German speakers, as an ‘enemy alien', because oi his Czechoslovak passport. in 1953 he iinally settled in
Switzerland.
Most oi Kokoshka’s visits to Scotland happened during the waryears, with two extra visits in 1929 and 1969. His times spent in Fort William, Galloway, and Uliapool provided respite lrom worry about his iamily and iriends in Austria and Czechoslovakia, the war, and his health. Most oi the works on show reilect a positive outlook (helped by his fortuitous signature — 0K!). The main revelation are the watercolours, which he used rarely betore the war, and the coloured crayon drawings. They give an impression oi a man who enjoyed his load — lobsters, raspberries, cherries, bananas, pheasant, mushrooms all make an appearance.
it’s interesting to see paintings hung with their drawings or studies oi similar subjects. Whereas the paintings show an interest in colour and the paint itseli, with drawing low in the list oi priorities, the crayon pieces show a real enjoyment oi drawing and the use at line. There are landscapes, sometimes with iigures, or with cows, sheep or ponies, which are iresh and assured. Notes 01 what he left behind on his visits north oi the border are provided by the determined Sell Portrait at a Degenerate Artist, and Loreley, a painting which is both an allegorical analysis oi how Brittania no longer rules the waves, and criticism oi the shipping out at ‘enemy allens’.
