Linda McCartney’s best-advertised claim to tame is her married name. More recently, she’s been seen as a role model Ior environment-conscious housewives, describing how she substituted veggie sausages Ior meat ones without hubby noticing, and publicly endorsing Arir cleaning products.
But her career as a photographer, which began long belore she gained the title ol Beetle Bride, has tended to receive little attention. Recently returned Irom Japan, where she’s been working on Paul’s world tour, she is now combining both her other roles In an exhibition opening at Edinburgh’s Talbot Rice Gallery on Sat 30, which will later tour Scotland.
Her exhibition Is the llrst arts-related event to be mounted by Friends 0t The Earth (Scotland), whose representative Kirsten Harris explains, ‘we’re trying to draw attention to our work through arts columns rather than environment columns.’
‘We want to be seen as a non-sexist organisation,’ adds her colleague Graham McGIachlan. ’That’s why we aslred Linda ratherthan Paul. She’s been a proiessional photographer ior twenty-live years, and she’s an artist In her own right.’
Ms McCartney has donated a collection oi eighty photographs, previously exhibited at the Victoria And Albert Museum. They include landscapes, wildlite shots, still lite compositions, and portraits (mostly ol the members ol 0840, with one sell-portrait, and one discreet shot ol Paul).
The exhibition will be accompanied by a bookstail with inlormation about all environmental Issues, but is Intended mainly to highlight the current Native Woodlands campaign. This seeks to protect the remaining one per cent at Scotland’s indigenous lorestry, and draws attention to the harmtul etiects oi large-scale conller plantations.
ll it’s successlul, the project will be a lurther step on the long and grinding road towards halting environmental destruction. (Andrew Burnet)
