A HUNGARY LOOK
Catharine Orbach: Mecsek Walks, Hetherbow, Edinburgh
Last year, Catharine Orbach spent nine months In Hungary, near the Mecsek Hills. Originally invited by a printmaking workshop to stay tor a month, she then iound part-time work teaching English and so managed to stay on with time enough tor exploring the region and making prints.
The show is divided into sections oi work in diiierent techniques. The main part is oi colouriui linocuts - a way at working that is devalued in many people’s minds by its associations with school art classes. Orbach used it partly because it suited her subject- iandscape, and in particular, woods and trees - but also ior pragmatic reasons. In common with most oi the eastern European countries, art

materials have been scarce and expensive. Lino, and a good lino press, were available; but the colour-range oi the inks was limited. However, within those restrictions, she has managed to produce some iine and exciting prints, which I hope will encourage others to value the technique more highly.
My iavourite section oi the exhibition were drawings taken irom sketchbooks kept during her visit, lramed with diary-like writings about the countryside she was exploring. These had an intimacy that was lost in the couple oi larger paintings which worked up some oi the ideas, and were more obviously concerned with Hungarian village Iiie ratherthan European woods and hills.
