r V: Five years oi Photogan In Fine Art, Glasgow School at Art. In-house art college exhibitions have a habit oi looking either complacently sell-congratulatory or embarrassineg bad. This is neither, though in retrospect it may turn out to be a watershed. The Fine Art Photography course has been up and running tor live years, long enough tor the iirst graduates to be through their post-graduate courses or linished with their ioreign scholarships, to have tested the water and be earning a living and making art (two. Catriona Grant and Martha McCulloch, lor example, have setup and are running the excellent Streetlevel Gallery). It’s long enough lor the course tutors, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Roger Palmer and Vaughan Judge, to have established their criteria and developed the course. The list at visiting artists Is impressive (including ian Hamilton Finlay, Sue Arrowsmlth, Sharon ltiveland, Hamish Fulton, David Nash and Prade Malde). The exhibition Is thus both a celebration ol having survived the dodgy initial years- In a time ol ever-increasing cuts; It is also (despite including as many present and past students and visiting artist/tutors as possible) a careiully considered statement at intent.
Although there is a huge variety in the work on show, there is a discemibie
FIVE YEAR FOCUS
overall sensibility. Students and mature artists (the show integrates their work) are interested In exploring means ol representation, rather than accepting representation as straightlorward and unproblematic; with a majority ol the pieces the viewer ls made to work at looking, and thereiore to question the way she or he looks at things. This Is not the place lor budding David Baileys. There is alien an interest In the body, though bodies are never turned into objects and represented as ’the nude’. Many ol the works are In two or more parts, juxtaposing images or parts of images. In this way the viewer’s space is disorientated, olten pleasurably, sometimes problematically, sometimes poeticaily. Thomas Joshua Cooper, course leader, is known internationally lor his metaphoric use ol landscape; students come irom tar and wide speciiically to study with him. It's known for being a tough course. Yet it is clear that despite his huge, potentially overwhelming energy, the department is not merely turning out Cooper-clones. Instead, the students rigorously question every way oi seeing; that is the department’s strength. Picking out the work 01 Individual students would be invidious; It's a thoughtlui, important exhibition. (Hilary Robinson)
