SONNY ROLLINS
Listening to a rather wan sax and bagpipe duet at Edinburgh's recent Folk Festival, 1 was reminded oi the amazing exchange on an early 70's album between jazz bagpiper and saxophonist Rulus Harley and tenor man Sonny Rollins (see photo). A iriend once told me oi the time she watched him play a club in San Francisco, on blues guitar, she swears he didn't touch the sax all night. Rollins will try anything, and iinds himsell, at the age or 59, esteemed as the greatest living lmprovlsor in jazz. He has had substantial achievements as a composer and though never the complete innovator in terms oi lorm, has evolved an unmistakeable, decisive authority and edge in his tone on the horn, and projects a charismatic intelligence in his music. Alter Coltrane, he's the man most saxophonists cite as their major inlluence, and with his Quintet, plays his tirst and only Scottish concert, the major event at the jazz year, in Edinburgh's Usher Hall on the 28th.
