_ ZIP

Supporting Erasure on their current tour are a new band called Zip, whose single ‘Your Love‘ has just seen the light of day on the independent Immaculate Records. Zip comprises Gerard Cookson, Mark Sanderson and singer Pete Shelley, a legend in his own tiietime, but a legend who prelers not to be an overbearing presence in the group. Sanderson and Cookson have both worked with Shelley on his solo work, but it’s stressed thatZip is very much a collaborative effort. ‘At the moment I'm providing the bqu at the songwriting,’ says the man who penned ‘Love You More’, ‘Ever Fallen In Love‘, ‘Homosapien’ and too many other classics to mention, ‘butthere’s increasing co-operation. This is the first time I’ve consciously chosen the people t‘ve worked with. The Buzzcocks just sort or tell together.“

Forthe moment, ‘Your Love' isthe only Zip vinyl seeing the light of day. Material is being worked on in front at audiences on the Erasure tour (th's lirst live shows) betore any recordings are made. It's a deliberate contrast to the accepted music business way, in which a group records a whole album in one go and the record company plucks singles lrom it at regular intervals. This, says Shelley, robs the music at

if

spontanaelty, the sense at a band developing through time and an essential bond with the audience. ‘There isn'tthat correlation between what comes out and what the band are doing musically at the time. When there was a singles market ideas and trends would have a last turnover— about a couple at months. It was easier to change, and to rellect what was going on around. The Buzzcocks recorded when we felt like it.‘

Live work is at paramount importance to Zip, lorthe feedback with the audience. They are not, however, deliberately aiming for Top of The Pops. ‘It you aim torthat you might as well go into the mainstream way of doing things.

Though not convinced by the theory that great upheavals in music occur every ten years Shelley admits that the popularity of hip-hop and house music has expanded the range of what people can think at as music. He is, though, dismayed at the resurgence oi Seventies disco. It is, after all, the sort ol thing that he and the rest or the class at ’77 wanted to sweep away lorever. ‘People keep saying to me, Oh, it grows on you. My reply to that is that it I found that growing on me I'd cut it oh.’ (Mab)
