Despite the boycott ol the Commonwealth Games staged to demonstrate those countries’ solidarity in the fight against apartheid in South Africa, the Commonwealth Arts Festival (although itself the victim of some withdrawals) proved to be one of last summer's success stories. Indirectly through the sense of community created or directly through the performance of protest songs, the artistic contributions from the Commonwealth proved an effective voice in the anti-apartheid protests, and this is echoed throughout this year's music show, the main part of which begins with a anti-apartheid concert.
