An Operatic Gala with Dame Joan Sutherland making her first British concert performances for 5 years; Christmas with The King's Singers, Pinchas Zukerman playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto and an evening with Stuart Burrows. These are just some of the highlights in a season that also marks a new era for the SCO—our first season with new Principal Conductor, Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Providing a back-cloth to this rich tapestry of music and artists are the familiar masterpieces, many of Mozart’s best-loved symphonies, his Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments (of 'Amadeus' fame). Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 3 'Eroica', 4 and 7, Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Scotch Symphony and Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings.

OPERA DOUBLE BILL
Covering up any sadness which will surely be tell as the RSAMD leaves its inadequate but altectionately regarded Glasgow home in Nelson Mandela Place (Iormerly SI George’s Place) for the purpose-built New Building just minutes up the road, students of the opera school have chosen an entertaining comedy double-bill as theirlinal production. Guaranteed to produce tears at only the laughter variety, this hilarious double act is Mozart‘s The Impresario and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. Although Gianni Schicchi has been done several times at the Academy, the last time being live years ago in a production by Peter Ebert, this is a first lorThe Impresario. Both operas (to be sung in English) are entirely cast lrom students lrom the Opera School, giving as many as possible the chance of singing. As conductor Leanard Hancock says,

‘We’re doing them double cast lor the most part,’ meaning that those on nights one and three, are interchanged with those on nights two and tour, ‘and they're being done with lull orchestra, staging and production.’ As these young singers prepare lor joining the protession lull-time, their last performances don‘t let them all lightly. ‘The Impresario demands some virtuoso singing as the subject is an impresario trying to engage two rival sopranos' says Hancock ‘and the ladies go at one another, let us say, slightly poisonously.’ lt promises great lun mixed with excellence and should Iullil Hancock’s wish ‘to go out in a high way.’ (Carol Main)
