The eight men of Bulava are pseudo-Cossack entertainers from, of all places, Canada. Their performance - a mixture of traditional music, dance and theatrical Showmanship in a contemporary nightclub/concert setting - is an attempt to pay tribute to those free-spirited Ukrainian fighters of yore. What it amounts to is over-extended, albeit good-natured, Cossack kitsch, a tad sexist and totally lacking in irony, but heartily wholesome for all that. They're a

likeable enough troupe: passable clowns, adequate singer/musicians, and skiliul athletes who can leap, split and so on with the best of ’em. They genuinely want their brand of agreeably bastardized ethnic showbiz to please. Within limits, it does, but if you want something closer to the real thing, wait for the Georgian State Dance Company next month. Suggestion: Bulava is perhaps ideally viewed on a lull stomach, topped up by several vodkas. (Denis O'Toole)
