I ‘- IW y. , -.~‘ / V1,, Twenty-five years of Scottish Opera is well worth celebrating. And celebrate they do with a stunning new production of the same opera they chose tor their first ever performances back in the heady days 011962. Puccini's Madam Butterfly opened to spontaneous applause before anyone had even appeared on stage, earned by the three-level tenement-like network of wooden building fronted by a delicately drooping pink blossom tree.
In an exceptionally strong line-up, Yoko Watanabe is a visually striking Butterfly of strength and conviction, rather than the wishy-washy geisha
type so often easily portrayed. If at first the Iusciousness oi Puccini’s unbroken lines of melody escaped her, she more than made up for it as the drama ofthe music unfolded. As her opposite number, the Finnish tenor Seppo Buohonen as the dirty American rotter
Lieutenant Pinkerton ofthe US Navy is equally powerful, both as actor and singer.
Strong performances too from Anne-Marie Owens as the ever-faithful Suzuki, Norman Bailey as Sharpless and Neil Jenkins as Goro the marriage broker.
Much of this must be the responsibility of the Spanish director, Nuria Espert, whose triumph makes it all the more incredible that this is the first opera production she has tackled. Conductor of the 1962 performance, Sir Alexander Gibson, was back in the pit, drawing a warm, tuil inclsiveness from his players.
Scottish Opera‘s Madam Butterin is on at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow on Wednesday 20 May and 2 and 5 June. it transfers to Edinburgh for two performances on 24 and 27 June. (Carol Main)
