ALL THAT JAZZ
Walk into the Printmakers Workshop and be bowled overby Dominic Snyder's giants. ‘Jazzworks’ isthe name and the galleries there are buzzing with musicians.
Downstairs iour big players, with no particular name tag, are lined up to hit your eyes. One plays a sharp orange sax. Another holds a double bass taut. His blue suit sets oil a red lie. The
drummer, eyes closed in concentration taps a green kit and the ‘Trumpet Giant’
at the end, in the middle oi a cool solo, becomes one with his instrument.
In 1985 Snyder was asked to paint a backdrop lorthe ‘Round Midnight’
series at the Queen’s Hall, but the huge
canvas has never gone out oi
commission and is being used this year
ior their current season. The giants at the Printmakers make a worthy encore. Though smaller in scale, they too would make stunning harmonies with live musicians.
Upstairs, the other two lrom this sextet are more Iiielike and soiter than the bulky, black, black-outlined bunch below. There are smaller silk-screen prints at jazzmen too. And women. ‘Minnie the Moocher’ packs a mean sax. All have a strong, equal, rhythmic physicality. One big foot steps iorward and muscled arms bend behind the intruments.
Snyder is bold about using a style which looks directly back to Leger and Twenties’ and Thirties’ graphics. He makes no bones about the thick black lines and angular limbs. His economy with paint and quick-lire bmshwork is reireshing to see and he has struck on a iormula that certainly works in jazz. (Alice Baln)

A ton of marble hanging in a cradle of steel from the Fruitmarket‘s rafters introduces this Italian artist to Edinburgh. This major retrospective makes many references to other historical art forms and to philosophy. The marble piece ‘Efeso‘ looks back to ancient Greece. Some may find it a rather cool look at landscape but it‘s worth taking some time to absorb the calm thought the exhibition provokes. State at the Art: Sandy Nairne: Talk Sat 21 Feb. 4pm. Free. Football matches. ale-house punch-ups and wedding dances are amongst the repertoire ofthis little known artist who delighted in depicting the genre scenes ofthe late 18th and 19th century Lothians. The Art oi illustration: Banks Florilegium Until Wed 6 May. Joseph Banks headed a small group of naturalists on board Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour between 1768 and 1771. At every stop on their world trips, plants and flowers were collected and drawn by the young Scottish artist Parkinson. Though the watercolours and sketches were finished by a group of artists back in England (Parkinson died on the trip home) the 743 copper plates prepared for publication never hit the press. Using original techniques, the British Museum and Alecto Historical Editions are continuing the grand project and a complete edition of the work is underway.
