369 Gallery, Edinburgh Kafka, his life and books, is a big subject. Ian Hughes, a young Scottish painter, throws himself to the mercy of it and gets tied up. In thick oil paint. The huge face of the writer and his uncaring father are cut out of nightmare colour laid on with little control. Features spurt blood (Kafka died of TB) and though there is undoubtedly a disturbing message, it becomes camouflaged by the complexity of the symbolism and reference Hughes pours into almost every piece.

Czech’s life. Colour, composition and technique are united with the subject. Swaying with disturbance like a Van Gogh tree, the ‘AscanisherHof’ has more behind its windows than is behind the bleeding eyes of Kafka.
Footnotes to the exhibition are provided by small black and white period photographs over-painted with the same fiery colours. Hughes has included all the main characters, Kafka, his fiance, his father, the sanatorium. Prague. They at least might give you some idea of what’s happening next door. (Alice Dain)
the Eighties, The Face, The Tatler, Blitz and Ritz to name merely a handful, have been important in providing a platform for young, creative photographers like Brian Griffin, Johnny Rozsa and Alastair Thain.
