JOHN GILMOUR
— DANCE FOR AFRICA
Dance for Africa, in the now tried and successfully tested Geldof tradition of performer participation, will be raising money for Unicef’s children in need fund during a week-long nationwide project. As a welcome spin-off, the profile of dance will be given a boost. The organisers of the Scottish branch of the event hope that ‘it will show just how much is going on up here.’
Events planned will range from
‘window dressing' by Catalyst to major benefit performances at the King’s in Edinburgh and the Tron in Glasgow, involving artists from the whole dance profession. Though the major company Scottish Ballet will be involved, the accent over the week will be on community participation and dance for fun.
One of the most unusual events will take place on Sat 6 Dec in the Assembly Rooms‘ George Street windows. Saturday shoppers will be treated to a day-long performance by Catalyst. Lynsay John, dancer and designer, is looking forward to the event but says. ‘It will take a lot of mental preparation. We will be dancing three hours each in all lourwindows.’ The last time John was part of a window display, curiosity got the better oi one shopper. She pinched his burn to see whether he was man ormannequin.
In the West, Rotating Dancers and others will be taking to the Glasgow streets on the same day, shaking their collecting cans, and the good old days are revived on Wed 10 Dec, when the Coleman Dancing School give tips in the cha cha cha at Glasgow Arts Centre.
In London, 200 trombones, a group of Cossack dancers and a laser spelling ‘Dance For Africa’ across the skyline will herald the nation's involvement in the project. All Glasgow and Edinburgh events are listed on this page and contact numbers are given for details of other Scottish areas. Get your sponsorship forms now to Dance For Africa. (Alice Bain)
