As tar as Saints' Days this month are concerned, that oi St Andrew, Patron Saint oi Scotland on 30 Nov is rightly the most honoured. But earlier, on 22 Nov, lalls the special day at the Patron Saint at Music, St Cecilia. As with all saints, lite was neverstraightiorward.
Desperately determined to keep vows oi Christianity and celibacy in 2nd Century pagan Rome, martyrdom came in a dry bath, heating courtesy oi the leaping ilames surrounding it, iollowed by decapitation. Curiously, apart from a vague rumour oi an angel enticed to earth by the charms oi Cecilia’s singing, there is no mention oi music in her life. It’s even reported that the only reason she is the patron saint oi music is due to the mis-reading at a Latin text in the 16th century. In spite oithls, St Cecilia is now well and truly regarded as the tutelary saint oi music and musicians and has inspired both literature (Chaucer's Second Nun's Tale in Canterbury Tales and Pope’s Ode ior Music on St Cecilia’s Day) and music.
