BLOW IN THE BAG

Scotland’s premier ‘folk singer‘ Dick Gaughan is appearing in two related Assembly Room concerts in Edinburgh. The first is an evening for the ANC (Fri 14 Nov) and the second (Sun 23 Nov) is a celebration of the life of Paul Robeson, black actor, singer and socialist activist who is remembered speaking at the Edinburgh Miners' Gala. Both events have a fine list of artists and performers. The folkus of activity is for the next two weeks, however, at the other end of the MB. The Glasgow Tryst is a series of concerts, ceilidhs and workshops, 22—23 Nov. centred on the old Merchant City (see listings). Picked out from a host of Scottish performers are the Clutha, with a wonderful collection of Scots Song; Aly Bain, fiddle maestro; and the artful musicianship of the Whistlebinkies. A pipe band and dance group from Brittany will be causing a stir at various venues, with their tradition of call and response between the Bombarde, a mouth-blown shawm and the Biniou —the small bagpipe played in dutet. The bombarde is also used in the band with lull size warpipes.

Another concert of devotees of the ‘ill wind that nobody blows good’ is one of a series of events, concerts, readings and exhibitions on the Crofting Movement and the history of the West Highlands that runs for the month at the Third Eye Centre. Among the musical

offerings is a revue (Fri 21 Nov)

Hamish and Ken between them play every species of bellows-blown bagpipe found in Scotland the Borders and mix the airs and tunes with Ken's songs on guitar and cittern. I should have said almost every species of bagpipe. There is, of course, John Gahagan’s nearly complete set of Springburn Low Pipes that appeared at last year’s Tryst! (Norman Chalmers)
