The Scottish Bestiary was launched with black ties last Tuesday in London. Not, as the brochure claims, by Bruce Maclean on the River Clyde in September (unless it was under cover of darkness). The Bestiary has been conceived by young entrepreneur Charles Booth-Clibbom who heads an imprint called Paragon Press, coniusingly connected with Edinburgh in the publicity brochure, but in loot based in London.

The book (A portiolio edition is also available, signed, ior eaooo) ioliows the traditional allegorical/social/morai stance oi the genre. Bruce Maclean portrays the ladder of success and John Knox a whale stuck with arrows. Howson’s stag can be lound in the bar while oeliany’s Wildcat is out tor a booze-up with the owl and the pussycat.

It is an interesting, quirky set oi prints butthe comparison with the masterpiece, John Audubon’s Birds oi America, as stated in the brochure, must surely win this year’s prize for

Goldblatt confronts the everyday in black and white communities of this racially divided country. The exhibition spans a period of over 30 years documenting an ‘intricate and uncomfortable picture of South African society.’

Although really intended for children, adults can go along to this special adaptation of Scottish Opera‘s current production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe. Performed by the full cast, orchestra and chorus and introduced from the stage by Thomas Hemsley, this will be the ideal first time to the opera for children of any age. One condition adults must be accompanied by children.

Young artists being presented this evening are the Britten String Quartet playing Mozart’s Quartet No 6 in C, K465 and Britten’s No 1 in D Op 25. Sharing the platform is pianist Yeoh Ean Mei who plays Beethoven, Debussy and Scriabin. Although young, these musicians are very talented and ought to be worth hearing.
