It an exhibition just opened in Stills Gallery, David Goldblatt, a South African photographer, records the lives and landscapes of ordinary people in a country where institutionalised racial discrimination creates the pattern of daily life. He rides on the 2.30am bus full of migrant workers desperately trying to sleep on their long journey through the night from Woiwekraal to Pretoria. He portrays the Alrikaaner on his farm, dreaming of a dam to water his garden or surrounded by the security of family mementoes in a solid home. Com Flip du Toit sits confident and relaxed on his workshop step. Large hands to the tore, his bulky frame dominates the picture. It would be easy to miss the beautilul iigure through the door standing like a conscience,

unseen. Only in one picture, of a white larmer's son with his nursemaid, is there anything approaching genuine human contact between white and black. She curls her hand around his ankle as he touches her back. But there is barbed wire behind them and he stands over her, a position he will maintain throughout their lives.
Ouietly collecting the details of people’s lives overa number of years, David Goldblatt shows the suffering and despair of one reality against the ignorance and blind determination of another.
