William Scott’s dual nationality has led to this major retrospective exhibition, organised by the Arts Council at Northern Ireland, to be shown at the Gallery oi Modern Art, Edinburgh. Scotland and Ireland, the countries or Scott's parents, are the only stops on this short tour. But that limited showing should not suggest a parochial artist or interest. Forsome time, Scott, now 73, has been recognised as a senior British artist and has been exhibiting internationallyior many years. And, lrom the evidence of a liietime's work, it one influence had to be extracted from his paintings, it would not be that at his home countries, but that of France. The names of Cezanne, Chardin, Bonnard, The Lascaux Caves and France itseli (Scott lived there in the late Thirties) are reiterated by Ronal Alley in the catalogue essay, and together seem to provide the elements of a touchstone lor Scott's painting throughout his career.
The first room of the exhibition shows the young Scott limbering up. ‘Louise’ has the colouring and stature of a Gauguin model. ‘James' gazes naively lrorn oval eyes and a plate of fruit is

The organisers of Dazzle jewellery exhibitions (seen annually at the Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Festival) were asked by the City Art Oentre to select a group of designers which would show the range ofwork being produced in Britain in the fields ofjewellery. bodywear and small sculptures. Their choice includes 35ft long paper necklaces. amoebic jewellery and decoration for nipples. Though people like Mick Jagger. Annie Lennox and Salmon Rushdie have bought works from the designers on show. there will be the opportunity to purchase pieces for as little as
£3.50 (rising into thousands for some).

Born in Edinburgh‘s (‘owgate in 1868. Connolly was executed 48 years later for his part in the Easter Rising in Dublin. This exhibition documents Connolly‘s life and his international associations with the socialist and trade union movements.
