CARMEN
" Designer Michael Yeoman puts this production oi Carmen in a sparse set on a large revolving stage, to cleverly give structure and deilnltlon to the action. Escamlllo’s iamous Toreador song is sung irom the top at a long table whose length is the diameter oi a circle oi people in the tavern. As he sings- and as the set revolves-the crowd rise like a ripple to cheer, hats tossed in the air -the more eiiective ior being silent. A group of soldlers sitting together in their yellow unlionns rise as it in a patch oi sunlight.
Part oi the stage rises up at right angles, dividing the stage into two halves. It is a simple but highly effective device which is used to almost cinematic eiiect in the third act. Escamillo and the nervous toreadors emerge from their edgy darkness on one side to the colour oi the cheering crowd on the other. Then, by slowly revolving the stage, it is as though the camera pulls back and we have an aerial glimpse oi the action which pans

the scene, observing Carmen slip onto the stage to rendezvous with her lover.
Jenny Mlller acquitted horse-It well In Emily Golden's absence due to illness, a heartless Carmen to Gary Bachlund's touching Don Jose, and Jane Leslie MacKenzie made a particularly tine and lyrical Micaela. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Liszt’s death, the SNO open with the symphonic poem The Passing Of Beatrice by William Wallace. And if you though William Wallace was a 13th century Scottish patriot, then ofcourse you’d be right, but there was another one after that. Born in Greenock in 1860 this William Wallace based tonight’s' work on Dante and the connection comes in when you learn that Liszt’s Dante Symphony is also being performed.
