Burrell Gallery, Glasgow until July 13. Glasgow's Burrell Collection is rich in 19th century French art bought moreoverwhenthe word Impressionism was new. So it is apt thatthe major exhibition at Impressionist Drawings organised by The Arts Council oi Great Britain and selected by Christopher Lloyd and Richard Thomson, should have its final, and indeed definitive, showing at the Burrell Gallery which has lent no iewer than ten examples. Some of these are world lamous, like Degas’ pastel oi Jockeys in the Rain, Manet’s Two Women Drinking Beer and Benoir’s glowing likeness ol a Young Woman with Red Hair. But others (ex-catalogue in some cases and seen only in Glasgow) are rather less so, like the tiny but totally expressive sketch by Degas of horse and rider in the exhausted moments at the end at a race.
This is a splendid selection ranging right across the subject irom outright masterpieces like the tour Seurat studies in come crayon, almost mystical in their eiiect—two at them

: we .I .. related to one oi his greatest paintings, La Grande Jatte; and the wall oi Cezanne wash drawings in which every single mark is alive with meaning; through the kind of brilliant demonstration at eye and hand in perlect accord which maniiests itseli in Boudin's terse and telling sketch ot tlgures on that iavourite beach at Trouville; to the comical - and surely iaux naive - pen and wash illustrations by Lucien Pisarro tor a book oi nursery rhymes.
It is an exhibition too, which springs not a iew surprises. Who would have thought to be presented with evidence that Monet and Boudin once had a lot in common (see the two neighbouring
pastel landscapes each called Sunset Over the Sea) together presaging in the 1860s, the emotional surge oi Nolde; or that Degas had he been so inclined might have been as line a landscape painter as any. There’s a spice oi humour, too, here and there: Forain's Man in a State oi Happy Repose sees that incorrigible satirisi in top iorm and in good humour. (Cordelia Dliver)
